PSU Finalizes Climate Action Plan

PLYMOUTH, N.H.- Plymouth State University has proudly released its official Climate Action Plan (CAP). Prepared by the President's Commission for Environmental Sustainability (PCES), the plan has been under development for almost two years. The primary goals of the efforts reported in the plan are to:

1. Define and measure the Carbon Footprint of the University

2. Establish an institutional climate commitment

3. Set out a plan for integrating the issues of sustainability across our curriculum

4. Develop a mitigation plan for the campus that will achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.

As an early signatory of the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment, PSU joined other institutions of higher learning in recognizing their important leadership role in efforts to address environmental issues, including climate change. As part of this commitment, The President's Commission for Environmental Sustainability was formed in 2007. The commission is made up of students, faculty, staff and community members who take an active role in improving PSU's relationship with the environment.

The University carbon footprint for 2009 was slightly over 21,100 metric tons. This is higher than the baseline year of 2001, but much lower than the institutional high of 2004. The commitment the University has made with this report is to reduce its emissions by 50% no later than 2025, and to completely eliminate emissions by 2050.

"We are working on a number of possible solutions," said Bill Crangle, co-chair of the PCES. "It will require a combination of technologies such as biomass, solar, geothermal and others to achieve these goals, as well as changes in behavior. The University has been and is currently working very hard to make all of our facilities and infrastructures as energy efficient as possible. We can achieve these goals as long as we stay focused."

A significant part of the Climate Action Plan discusses Plymouth State's responsibility to increase its focus on issues of sustainability and the environment throughout its curriculum and across all areas of campus life, including cultural programming, student activities, residential life, and dining services. The CAP also provides plans for enhancing research and community interaction.

"Addressing environmental issues requires more than just technology," asserts Dr. Brian Eisenhauer, incoming Director of the Office of Sustainability. "To be successful our activities need to include a focus on people and the choices we make in our everyday lives, and we must involve diverse people and interests in our decision-making. We look forward to continuing to cooperate with community partners and all members of our campus to improve our relationship with the environment."

The full report can be found here.

In addition, PSU has been recognized in The Princeton Review's Guide to Green Colleges, a compilation of the most environmentally-responsible higher education institutions in the United States. As criteria for inclusion, the Guide considers an institution's commitment to LEED building certification, environmental literacy programs, formal sustainability committees, use of renewable energy resources, and recycling and conservation programs. The United States Green Building Council partnered with the Review in compiling the list.

Plymouth State University Move-In a Success

PLYMOUTH, N.H.- One busiest and most exciting days of the year for Plymouth State University and surrounding communities arrived Sunday, August 29, with nearly 1,700 students and their families converging on campus for the annual move-in day.

"This is absolutely a joyous day," said PSU President Sara Jayne Steen. "It is such a wonderful chance to talk to students and their families, to find out what they are excited about and looking forward to during the upcoming academic year."

Traditionally held on the Sunday before the start of classes, PSU Move-In allows students to quickly and efficiently fill the University's eight residence halls with the help of staff, students and families. PSU's athletic teams, including the entire football team, help incoming students park, unload and move their belongings. PSU's new Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Rick, Barth, said he was impressed with how well organized the move-in went.

"It was outstanding," said Barth. "Having seen the move-in at five other institutions, I was impressed with the teamwork campus-wide -- the coaches, University police, student athletes, our returning students, our housing staff. Everyone has pitched in to make this almost flawless."

Paul McKinley of Chester, N.H., moved his daughter, Kayla, into PSU's venerable Mary Lyon Hall and said he was very happy with the process.

"It's been a breeze," McKinley said. "It's a great campus, everyone is very friendly, and there are a lot of good things to do around the area. We're very happy with Plymouth State."

The move-in activity wasn't limited to residence halls. Students and parents were invited to visit the new PSU Welcome Center and Ice Arena, which is now open. The $16 million facility is part of the Center for Active Living, Learning and Wellness (ALLWell), a multi-phase complex designed to integrate academics and recreation for the campus, community and the region. Located along Holderness Road (Rte 175A), the environmentally sustainable building houses an ice rink for university and public use, in addition to the welcome center.

PSU has nearly 4,300 undergraduate students, 2,500 of whom live on campus. By Sunday evening, more than 80 percent of the students had moved in to their on-campus residences. The remainder will arrive on Monday and Tuesday before classes start Wednesday, Sept. 1.

PLYMOUTH, N.H.-Nearly 400 people were granted master's degrees and Certificates of Advanced Graduate Studies at Plymouth State University's 61st College of Graduate Studies graduation ceremony Saturday, May 14 at the Foley Gymnasium in Holderness, N.H.

"A graduate degree takes a special commitment," said PSU President Sara Jayne Steen. "As faculty members, we hope that we have provided you a safety net as you took risks in your research and performance, and that we've been role models of active learning and engagement."

PSU Students Weather Tropical Storm Irene

The more than 380 students who remained on the PSU campus during Tropical Storm Irene stayed safe and dry throughout the event.

Students who had arrived early were primarily student orientation leaders, residence hall staff and athletes. When the storm hit Sunday, PSU was prepared. All PSU buildings were staffed and dining services were in operation during the weekend. Students participating in off campus activities (such as an outdoor recreation group hiking in the White Mountains) were returned safely before Saturday night. Several dozen of the students remaining on campus volunteered to staff PSU's emergency evacuation shelter, which opened Sunday and was used by more than a dozen displaced area residents.

"Cooperation among Plymouth State and surrounding communities was extraordinary during the crisis," said PSU President Sara Jayne Steen.

Details on Move In activities will be announced later today (August 29).

Chicks, a short play performed by PSU Professor Elizabeth Cox 9/22-25

Chicks, a short play by Grace McKeaney, will be presented at Plymouth State University September 22-23 at 8 p.m., September 24 at 2 p.m. and September 25 at 3 p.m., in the Studio Theatre at the Silver Center for the Arts. The performance is offered as a scholarship fundraiser.

Performed by PSU Professor of Theatre Elizabeth Cox and directed by Professor Paul Mroczka, Chicks is a series of four sketches, each taking place on a different school day at a school somewhere in the Midwest. The single character in the play, Mary Margaret Phallon, has taught kindergarten in a public school which evidences the guidance of a teacher with a wild appetite for life and a healthy bill for psychoanalysis.

Miss Phallon has taught for 10 years and loves other people's children with a zest sometimes bordering on desperation. She has no children of her own, and is still living at home with her aging father. Phallon has a heart of gold, a sharp Irish tongue and a weariness now and then born of yearning for perfection in an imperfect world. She's a little tired of spending her days with people who pick their noses. Life is passing her by. Her humor almost saves her. Throughout the play she talks with students in an imaginary classroom, while speaking toward the audience.

Professor Cox says she is re-visiting this script after having played the character in 1994. "It is fun to come back to a role after your own life has provided you some insight, experience and ups and downs," she said. "Come be a part of my class."

Tickets for Chicks are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and youth at the Silver Center Box Office, (603) 535-2787 or (800) 779-3869.
